SCHOOL HISTORY

Queensland Private School was founded on January 11, 1988, by Mrs. Lilian Adenike Akinyelure

It started from a 3 bedroom apartment in the heart of Surulere at Ilesanmi Street off Alhaji Masha Street, in Lagos.

The mandate then was to cater to the education of children of nursery and primary school ages. It is worthy of note that Queensland started with 5 pupils, one teacher and one cleaner. At the very beginning, it ran the Nigerian curriculum only. In 2006, Queensland adopted the Nigerian/British curriculum and a fusion of Montessori in the Nursery. The reason for this is to use the good in each and achieve the rare blend it presently operates to achieve the wholistic development of the child.
In August 1994, the school moved to its present site at 1 – 5 Ebem-Oha Street, Okota, and in October 1999, Queensland Private School became an academy thus the change in nomenclature to Queensland Academy, in preparation of the birthing of a secondary school in the same year. The secondary school began with 4 students.

Presently, Queensland Academy Secondary operates a Nigerian/British International General Certificate of Secondary Education [IGCSE] Curricular, taking the examination and the Cambridge Checkpoint, registered, and approved by various examination bodies such as the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination [SSCE] conducted by the West African Examination Council [WAEC], and The Basic Education Certification Examination(BECE).

Queensland Academy has an organisational structure run by an established and experienced board of directors and management team of professionals, educational and otherwise, to meet the versatile needs of a constantly evolving and challenging value space.

Over the years, Queensland Academy has become affiliated with many organisations such as the British Council as an Attached Centre, the Africa Leadership Academy(ALA), South Africa, Associate member of the Association of International Schools Educators of Nigeria(AISEN), The United World Colleges (UWC), Junior Achievement Nigeria (JAN), the Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA), Best Buddies International (BBI), and associate member of the Association of Private School Educators in Nigeria (APEN).
Our students have participated in various competitions organized by the aforementioned associations and the Nigerian International Secondary Schools Model United Nations [NISSMUN] competition organized by Nigerian Model United Nations Society [NigMUNS], a non-governmental organisation registered under the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The organisation is recognised by the Federal Ministry of Education & Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has a Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council [nigmuns.org].

Queensland Academy, being a living entity, keeps evolving at its pace, developing potencies, setting high standards, maintaining same through retaining what works, reviewing what does not in order to learn the ‘why’, and constantly positioning following its ideologies by doing the hard things to meet present challenges and build a great and promising future for our stakeholders. It is an avowed belief.
